BHABUA, Sept. 11 -- The Kaimur district administration has launched a high-level inquiry following reports of mining department officials allegedly assaulting a truck driver and stealing cash on GT Road (NH 19) near the Uttar Pradesh border, police said on Thursday. Taking cognizance of a viral video of the incident, district magistrate (DM) Kumar Anurag has formed a two-member committee, comprising the additional collector and the district mining officer, to conduct an impartial investigation. The committee has been directed to carry out an on-site probe and submit a report within two days, the DM said on Thursday. The salaries of the concerned mining sub-inspector and the home guard jawans deputed during the period have been withheld with immediate effect for the month of September until the investigation is completed. Salary withdrawals will only be considered after receiving clearance from the inquiry committee, the DM said. Any incident of taking the law into one's own hands or abuse of power will not be tolerated,the DM said. The truck driver Raj Kumar Chandravanshi, a resident of Parchha in adjacent Rohtas district, alleged that he was carrying a load of sand from Bihar and was heading towards UP. Mining department team stopped his truck near the Karmnasha bridge. The officials pulled him down, assaulted him with sticks and snatched the cash he was carrying. He sustained multiple injuries. Mining inspector Pradeep Kumar, however, said that the driver sustained the injuries while running and claims of assault are baseless. The truck overloaded with sand was fined Rs.9.18 lakh....
