PATNA, Sept. 13 -- Tension prevailed in Sitamarhi on Saturday following the daylight murder of Vaidyanath Mahato, the RJD district vice-president and husband of a Zila Parishad member. Mahato, the husband of Khushdil Devi, a Zila Parishad member from constituency number 13, was shot dead early morning near Patharia cremation ground in Ketharia-Rampatti village under Dumra police station. He had left home for his routine morning walk around 6 am when four motorcycle-borne men surrounded him and sprayed bullets on him. Eight bullets hit him and he died on the spot, said police officers who reached the spot and are investigating the crime. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and swift action will be taken against the culprits, Sitamarhi's Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Ranjan said, adding that the exact circumstances leading to Mahto's death could only be ascertained after thorough investigation. The killing triggered immediate unrest. Angry villagers gathered at the scene, blocked roads and confronted police. Crowds pelted stones at officers, injuring at least one inspector. Several police vehicles were vandalised, with windows smashed and one vehicle overturned. Locals also set fire to the house of Tribhuwan Kushwaha alias Ajaz, whom they named as the prime accused. Police said that Mahato had faced an earlier attack. On the night of August 28, shots were fired outside his house. He had lodged a complaint naming three persons, including Ajaz and handed over spent cartridges. No arrests were made. On September 8, hundreds of villagers had gheraoed Dumra police station, demanding security and action. Those demands went unmet. Residents alleged the murder stemmed from Mahato's opposition to illegal liquor supply in the village. They claimed Ajaz was linked to the trade and that the two had clashed over it. Police have not confirmed the motive. After getting the information regarding the murder, Sitamarhi Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Ranjan reached the spot and ordered immediate action. He suspended Dumra Station House Officer Mukesh Kumar and the investigating officer of the earlier firing case, Aditya Kumar. Both the officers face an internal probe into their handling of the previous complaint. The body was sent for post-mortem. Additional police forces were deployed to restore order. No arrests in the murder case had been reported by Saturday afternoon. Police said that they were investigating the case from all angles. Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, highlighted the incident to say that "law and order has collapsed under the Samrat Choudhary-led state government". "The manner in which crime has increased since Samrat Choudhary became the chief minister is concerning. Rapes, murders, kidnapping, and even police atrocities are happening on a daily scale. Law and order has completely collapsed in the state," he told reporters. Yadav alleged that the CM doesn't even care to visit the victims or their families, and is merely engaged in "empty talks"....
