Man sets self ablaze as administration moves to enforce court decree
MADHUBANI, June 17 -- Tension gripped Adhwari village under Benipatti police station limits in Bihar's Madhubani district on Tuesday after an elderly man allegedly set himself ablaze when a police and administrative team arrived to execute a court order in a long-pending land dispute, officials said on Tuesday.
"The incident took place when officials reached the village to hand over possession of the disputed land in compliance with a recent court decree", SHO Sanjay Kumar said.
According to local sources, Rajendra Thakur (60), one of the litigants, allegedly poured an inflammable substance on himself and set himself on fire in the presence of the officials.
Videos that surfaced on social media showed the man running from his house towards a nearby field with flames engulfing his body before collapsing. Amid the commotion, circle officer Abhishek Anand and others managed to leave the area. Court commissioner Ratnakar Jha, who had been appointed to oversee the execution of the order, was allegedly surrounded by villagers and held captive for nearly half an hour before being rescued.
Officials said the dispute had been pending between two families for several years. The latest court order had gone in favour of Mahendra Yadav, following which the administration initiated the process of handing over possession of the land.
Senior officials, including DSP Amit Kumar, SDO Sharang Pani Pandey and the circle inspector, rushed to the village with additional police personnel to restore law and order.
