Local bodies issue order on feeding zones for stray dogs
Jaipur, Aug. 28 -- In compliance with the Supreme Court's August 22 order, the Directorate of Local Bodies (DLB) has issued fresh directives to all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to create safe feeding zones for community dogs and ensuring humane sterilisation practices under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023.
As per the order issued on Tuesday evening, every ULB must identify and protect designated feeding points for stray dogs in consultation with Resident Welfare Associations and animal welfare groups.
Officials said the move aims to reduce human-animal conflict and provide safe spaces for both citizens and strays.
On sterilisation, the order stated that no dog below six months of age can be sterilised. Mandatory pre-surgery health tests and proper post-surgery care have also been directed, ensuring that the process remains scientific and humane.
DLB secretary Ravi Jain said the state is committed to lawful and compassionate control of the stray population.
"Sterilisation and vaccination under ABC is the only scientific and humane approach to reduce stray dog numbers," he said....
