Key parks, roads to be named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee: Samrat
PATNA, July 7 -- Bihar chief minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday announced that important parks or roads in district headquarters across the state will be developed and named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee, describing the former Union minister as a visionary leader who made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland.
In a post on X, the CM said the initiative would honour Dr Mookerjee's contribution to the nation and preserve his legacy for future generations. However, the exact number of parks or roads to be named after Mookerjee across Bihar's 38 districts was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, the Bihar BJP celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Mookerjee at the party's state headquarters in Patna, where leaders and party workers paid floral tributes to the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder, according to the party's communique.
Addressing the programme, BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi said Mookerjee dedicated his life to safeguarding the nation's unity, integrity and cultural nationalism. He said Mookerjee's resolve that "One nation cannot have two constitutions, two flags and two prime ministers" remains relevant as a symbol of his unwavering commitment to national unity.
Saraogi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat" draws inspiration from Mookerjee's ideals of putting national interest above everything else. He described the late leader's life as a lasting example of patriotism, public service and national self-respect.
Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP state organisational general secretary Bhikhubhai Dalsania, party office-bearers, public representatives and a large number of workers attended the function and paid homage to Mookerjee, the press release said.
At the conclusion of the programme, party leaders and workers resolved to spread Mookerjee's ideals among the people and continue working for national unity, integrity and development.
Mookerjee (1901-1953) founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological predecessor of the BJP, and served as India's first minister for industry and supply after Independence. He resigned from the Union cabinet in 1950 over policy differences and later spearheaded the movement against the special constitutional status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, raising the slogan, "Ek desh mein do vidhan, do nishan aur do pradhan nahin chalenge." He died in custody in Srinagar in 1953 after being arrested while entering Jammu and Kashmir without a permit....
