PATNA, Aug. 5 -- JD(U) legislator Shyam Rajak on Tuesday attributed shortcomings in coordination and management within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a key factor to the BJP's unexpected defeat in the Bankipur assembly bypoll. Talking to media persons on Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor's victory in the by-poll, Rajak called for a serious review within the NDA. "There was a shortcoming somewhere in coordination and management," he said, adding that lack of mutual trust among local workers was visible on the ground. While emphasising a detailed grassroots-level assessment involving party workers, dialogue with NDA voters and serious efforts to plug organisational gaps, he observed the BJP faced the poll debacle apparently owing to overconfidence of the senior NDA leaders. Bankipur, a prestigious urban seat in Patna long regarded as an impregnable BJP fortress, had remained with the party since 1995. It was most recently represented by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who vacated it after his election to the Rajya Sabha. In the bypoll, Kishor defeated BJP's Neeraj Kumar by over 19,000 votes, with the RJD candidate finishing a distant third. Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi, while saluting people's mandate, said the party would conduct a thorough review of the causes and reasons for the defeat, including why it received fewer votes. Congratulating the winning candidate in advance, Saraogi affirmed that the people of Bankipur remained the party's own and development work in the constituency would continue as a priority. Meanwhile, in New Delhi, JD(U) president and Rajya Sabha member Nitish Kumar met PM Narendra Modi at Parliament House on Tuesday. The meeting, attended by JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha and Union minister and Munger MP Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh, covered a range of issues concerning Bihar.
