Intense rain, waterlogged streets cripple life in Patna
PATNA, Aug. 4 -- Torrential rain since Saturday triggered widespread waterlogging in several areas across the state capital, including Patna railway junction. With 78.4mm of rainfall recorded in last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Sunday and 27.6 mm between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Sunday, daily life was severely disrupted.
Severe waterlogging was witnessed in many localities of the city. Hospitals, residential colonies, commercial hubs, schools, and even the Jayprakash Narayan International airport, Thakurbari Road, Birla Mandir Area, Nala Road, Rajendra Nagar, Sri Krishna Puri, New Patliputra Colony, Anandpuri, Shivpuri, and Sheikhpura were left waterlogged for hours. Vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, were seen struggling through ankle to knee-deep water in places like the HIG flats area in Bahadurpur Housing Colony.
In a particularly risky situation, power personnel were seen working at the 33/11 kV power substation in Bahadurpur Housing Colony, where a 10 MVA power transformer stood partially submerged. Although control panels are located inside a raised building, constructed after being affected in 2019, when Patna reported one of its worst waterloggings, concerns over electrical hazards loomed large.
"Our house has ankle to knee deep water in the compound. Sahyog Hospital, which is opposite the house where I stay, is waterlogged. The good thing, however, this time is that Patna Municipal Corporation has deployed additional motor pumps to flush out water from the Patliputra ground as well as from around medical facilities like the Sahyog and Ruban hospitals," said Nina Srivastava, a resident in Patliputra Colony, and also executive director of Equity Foundation, whose husband late Manoj Kumar Srivastava was a senior bureaucrat.
While most main roads did not have any accumulation of rainwater, waterlogging was reported in localities along Bailey Road and Khagaul Road, including Telecom Colony of Gola Road, Panchsheelnagar Road, Jhakhri Mahadev Marg, RK Puram area, Kaliket Nagar, AG Colony, Ram Jaipal Road, Apurva Vihar Colony, Urja Nagar, Bank Colony and many more.
The ongoing work of Metro rail in Danapur and many other areas led to waterlogging in areas along Bailey Road and Khagaul Road.
