Hot mic catches Xi
Patna, Sept. 5 -- The five-hour bandh called by Women's Cell of BJP fin protest against the alleged derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during a Mahagathbandhan rally in Darbhanga last week, passed of with sporadic incidents of clashes, road jams and forceful closure of business establishments across the state on Thursday.
Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju was also caught in a jam on NH-20 while on his way to Rajgir to participate in a function. Several aspirants of competitive exams were caught in such a road jam in Aurangabad.
BJP and its allies' MLAs, MPs, district presidents, and senior leaders took to the streets enforcing the bandh and raising slogans against the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal. The impact was more pronounced in districts like Patna, Begusarai, Siwan, Katihar, Purnia, Gopalganj, Munger, Bhagalpur, Sheohar, Jehanabad, Darbhanga, Gaya, Rohtas, Aurangabad and Bhojpur. In some places, bandh supporters blocked vehicular movement. Most shops and markets in major urban centres remained shut. Intercity bus services were suspended in several districts, severely affecting mobility.
In Darbhanga, three members of a family were reportedly injured in an attack by a group of protestors. All the injured were rushed to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
In Patna, prominent schools and coaching centres declared holiday. Protesters blocked the Patna-Gaya highway near Arwal Mor on old NH-83 and NH-110, burning tyres and deflating vehicle tyres, bringing movement to a standstill.
At Danapur, vehicles of a judge and joint secretary of the education department were forcibly stopped while in Jehanabad, protestors came on road with a road roller and disrupted vehicular traffic on NH-83 and NH-110. A lady teacher was forced to return to her house at Jehanabad when she was on way to school. At Bhagalpur, supporters of NDA allegedly manhandled a couple during a road blockade when they tried to cross the barricade. The protestors also manhandled a press photographer when he was doing his job. At Muzaffarpur, a mild scuffle with the protesters and RAF jawans took place over a blockade on Muzaffarpur-Darbhanga National Highway 27. BJP Mahila Morcha activists took out processions from the Muzaffarpur party office, waving flags and raising slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The demonstrators expressed sharp anger against both Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, demanding a public apology.
In Banka, markets were closed and the Bhagalpur-Banka main road blocked. At Amarapur bus stand of Banka, a key junction for inter-state travel, bus services remained suspended, and even passenger vehicles and school buses stayed off roads. Sitamarhi observed tense moments as BJP workers enforced a shutdown.
Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday broke his silence over the PM abuse row, saying no one should insult anyone's mother, but stressed that Modi must answer tough questions. He accused the PM of supporting tainted figures, insulting Sonia Gandhi, and ignoring past abuses against opposition leaders. Meanwhile, a defamation case was filed in Nalanda against Tejashwi, Rahul Gandhi, and others over alleged derogatory remarks about Modi and his mother, with hearings set for September 9. Similar cases have already been lodged in Patna.
Additional director general (law & order) Pankaj Darad said no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state. However, RJD and Congress shared a number of video clips on their social media handles alleging that BJP workers misbehaved with common people and tried to prevent people, including women, from reaching their places of work, railway stations to catch a train and hospitals for medical emergencies. RJD president Lalu Prasad came out with a strongly worded post on his X handle. "Did PM Modi order BJP members to insult the mothers, sisters, and daughters of Bihar and Biharis today? Gujaratis should not take Biharis so lightly. This is Bihar. Are BJP goons and ruffians abusing respected teachers, women walking on the streets, students, pregnant women, the elderly, and journalists, engaging in physical altercations and mistreating them? Is this appropriate? Shameful," he said.
Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, said, "Bihar will not tolerate the insult to Modi ji's late mother. Their shamelessness is such that not a single senior Congress leader has apologised for the incident so far. This shows the arrogance of the Congress and its alliance partners. People of Bihar will never forget those who hurled abuse at the deceased mother of the PM.
JD(U) national general secretary and state minister Ashok Choudhary said the bandh was a symbolic protest aimed at stressing the need for decorum in public life. "Democracy is all about dialogue, and foul language should not be used even for opponents. This must be ensured at public functions. Though people may speak in a manner they wish while in private," he said.
Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, in a post on X, wrote, "The disrespectful comment made against the late mother of PM Modi has hurt the soul of the entire nation. This is not just an insult to one mother, but to every mother in the country. In protest against this indecent behaviour, the women's wing has taken to the streets. Today, the entire country is united for the dignity of the mother and respect for women....
