High-stakes Bihar Council polls today
PATNA, Oct. 23 -- The stage is set for intense multi-cornered fight in Bihar Legislative Council elections for eight seats - four each from the graduate and teachers' constituencies - on Friday, amid usual allegations of rampant money play and bogus voters.
For the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the stakes are high, especially after the major reverse it suffered a few months ago by losing the BJP bastion of Bankipore in the by-poll necessitated by the elevation of party's national president Nitin Nabin to the Rajya Sabha. A good show will redeem the prestige for the NDA and that is what has made the alliance leaders go whole hog for it, even though the poll outcome will not have any impact on the health of the government.
The alliance hopes to cash in on the fissures in the Opposition camp, with the RJD, Congress and Left candidates face to face on several seats, and division of votes due to many players. The NDA has been able to control the rebellion, except for Patna Graduate seat where it has turned out to be a personal fight between JD(U) MLA Anant Singh and three-term party MLC Neeraj Kumar. This has also made Patna Graduate seat a hot seat this time, as it could also have an impact on the JD(U) infighting.
The terms of the eight members of the Graduates' and Teachers' constituencies are due to expire on November 16. The results of the eight seats will be announced on October 27 after counting and the entire election exercise will be completed by October 31. The Graduates seats going to polls are Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi, while Teachers' constituencies are Patna, Tirhut and Saran. Of the eight seats, independents at present hold three seats, BJP two, while one seat each is with the JD(U), Congress and the CPI.
Among the Graduate seats, the terms of Neeraj Kumar (Patna), Sarvesh Kumar (Darbhanga), Bansi Dhar Brajwasi (Tirhut), NK Yadav (Kosi) ends on November 16. From the Teachers' seats, terms of Naval Kishore Yadav (Patna), Madan Mohan Jha (Darbhanga), Sanjay Kumar Singh (Tirhut) and Afaque Ahmad (Saran) will expire on November 16.
Around 5.32-lakh voters will cast their votes at 933 polling booths across 30 districts....
