DARBHANGA, May 18 -- Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Sunday accused the ruling dispensation of undermining democratic institutions, suppressing dissent and pursuing anti-poor policies. Addressing a press conference on the second day of the party's 12th state conference in Darbhanga, Bhattacharya questioned the electoral process and alleged that lakhs of names had been removed from voter lists. "Their names should be restored, but instead there is talk of discontinuing government welfare benefits to them," he said, claiming that nearly 4.5 million people were at risk of losing ration cards and other welfare entitlements. "Earlier voters elected governments, now governments are choosing voters through the Election Commission," he alleged. The conference also saw discussions on Bihar's political situation, organisational functioning and the party's future course of action. Addressing the media along with central committee member Manju Prakash and district secretary Baidyanath Yadav, Bhattacharya said delegates from across Bihar representing farmers, agricultural labourers, students, youth, women and various mass organisations were participating in the conference. Criticising former CM Nitish Kumar, Bhattacharya said Kumar once spoke about good governance, social justice and politics against communalism, but Bihar had now been "handed over" to the BJP. He alleged that a "bulldozer raj" now prevailed in the state, where houses of the poor were being demolished, student and youth movements suppressed, and voices of dissent silenced. "The state has moved from the slogan of 'sushasan' (good governance) to 'bulldozer raj'," he said....
