GoM to assess socio-economic impact for Sanctuary tag to saranda
RANCHI, Sept. 25 -- The Jharkhand cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to institute a Group of Ministers (GoM) to assess the socio-economic impact of the proposed Saranda Wildlife Sanctuary in West Singhbhum district on forest dwellers, besides accounting for the impact it would have on economic activities in the region, officials said.
The decision comes amidst a contempt plea against the state being heard by the Supreme Court, which summoned the chief secretary of Jharkhand last week, accusing the state of 'playing tricks with the court' for delaying the notification to declare Saranda sanctuary spread across 57,000 hectares.
A bench of CJI Bhushan R Gavai and justice K Vinod Chandran passed the order on September 17 after it was informed that its April 29 order directing the state to complete formalities for issuing final notification within two months was sought to be defeated by the state, which formed a committee to review the sanctuary's boundaries in a bid to support the mining lobby. Next hearing is on October 8 and the CS has been asked to be present before the bench.
"The proposal to notify the Saranda Wildlife Sanctuary was discussed threadbare in the cabinet. All suggestions of the concerned stakeholding departments were discussed. It was then decided to institute a GoM which would assess the socio-economic impact of the forest dwellers as well as the impact on the economic activities in the region," minister Vandana Dadel said after the meeting chaired by the chief minister....
