Patna, Aug. 8 -- Piles of garbage from streets of the state started being cleared away as outsourced municipal sanitation workers were back to work on Friday after a clear consensus was achieved between top representatives of state urban development and housing department (UDHD) and Sanitation Workers Joint Action Committee wherein three fundamental demands including service security, direct transfer of wages and provision of paid leaves were met. Under the new system, sanitation workers across the state urban local bodies will technically get three salary hikes every year and a two-way mechanism will be put into place for grievance redress without the need of any strike. They will now get 13 month's salary every year. Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) commissioner Yashpal Meena told HT that the sanitation workers were back to work, adding that cleaning streets was the first priority followed by preventive preparations against vector-borne diseases, including fogging and use of bleaching powder and other necessary chemicals against larvae. Meena said the corporation was now functioning optimally and the situation was likely to be back on track within a day. While congratulating UDHD minister Nitish Mishra and department secretary Animesh Parashar for taking personal initiative in favour of the sanitation workers, Chandra Prakash Singh, president, Patna Municipal Corporation Employees Joint Coordination Committee, said that there will no longer be a daily-wager in any urban local body across the state as all such employees will now be declared contractual staff as part of the newly arrived consensus....
