PATNA, Aug. 1 -- In the biggest-ever ganja seizure in Bihar's Supaul district, police recovered approximately 1,718.5 kg of the contraband, estimated to be worth crores in the international market. Supaul Superintendent of Police (SP) Sarath RS told Hindustan Times that acting on a tip-off, a police team led by the Triveniganj SDPO set up a checkpoint (naka) at West Canal under Balua Bazar police station limits and intercepted a pickup van. However, the driver managed to flee the scene. "The ganja was packed in 46 sacks, and the entire vehicle along with the contraband has been seized," the SP said. An FIR has been registered against the vehicle's owner and unknown smugglers, and a manhunt has been launched to trace the vehicle driver, the owner, and both the sender and intended receiver of the consignment. Initial investigations suggest that the ganja was sourced from an unknown location and was being transported to Uttar Pradesh and Nepal via Supaul. "Curbing illegal ganja transportation is one of the top priorities of the district police. All police stations have been instructed to maintain strict vigil in their respective jurisdictions," SP Sarath added. This seizure comes just months after a similar bust on April 21, 2025, when the 45th Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) recovered over 1,062 kg of ganja near the Indo-Nepal border at Narpat Patti Border Outpost. That consignment was valued at approximately Rs.4.24 crore in the international market and was handed over to the Bhaptiyahi police station for further investigation....
