GAYAJI, Aug. 15 -- Four farmers, including a father and son, died from suffocation due to toxic gas inside a well in Garh Karmouni village, under the Dobhi police station area of Gaya district on Friday. The tragic incident occurred as a sequence of rescue attempts after a farmer went down to fix a water motor, police said. A farmer, Vijay Chaudhary, 45, went down the well to repair or adjust a water pump motor and was overcome by toxic gases, said police officers. Seeing him struggle, his son Vikas Chaudhary, 18, entered the well to save him. Two other local residents Dilchand Manjhi, 28, and Chamari Manjhi, 65, also climbed down to assist, but all four were trapped inside because of heavy concentration of gas and died. Suffocation from toxic, poisonous gases accumulated inside the old well caused the deaths, SDPO Sherghati-2, Rajan Kumar said. Local administration, police, and fire brigade rescue teams rushed to the site. During the rescue operation, a firefighter, Ajit Kumar also fell unconscious after inhaling the toxic air inside the well and was rushed to a hospital where he has been recovering. After considerable effort, all the bodies were pulled out from the well and sent for postmortem. Further legal action is underway, the SDPO said. Chief minister Samrat Choudhary announced solatium of Rs.4 lakh to the bereaved families. He, in a statement, expressed grief over the death of four people due to exposure to poisonous gas.
