BHABUA/AURANGABAD, May 15 -- Five people were killed in Bihar either due to lightning strikes or after being crushed under falling trees following severe storms and rains on Thursday. In Kaimur, Lalji Bind, 70, was killed when a tree fell on his hut after a lightning strike in Shahpur village. Meanwhile, Bhanu Bind, 40, died after a tree fell on him at Pahariya Khurd village. Musahari Bind died of lightning strike in Bhekas village while Laxman Kumar, 30, from Khajura Saraiya village, died in a collision between a motorcycle and a tractor during a storm. In Aurangabad, a 60-year-old woman was killed after a tree fell on her hut. In Patna, a driver was critically injured after a palm tree and an electric pole fell onto his vehicle, police said. In related developments, Kaimur district headquarters, Bhabhua, remained without power from 7 pm on Wednesday to 4 am on Thursday after trees fell on power transmission lines. Supply also collapsed in Chainpur, Chand, Bhagwanpur and Rampur blocks. Executive engineer Shashikant Kumar said, "Personnel are working to repair the damaged lines." The meteorological department issued an 'orange alert' for heavy rainfall in seven districts of North-Eastern Bihar on Thursday. Winds are expected to blow at a speed of 50 km/h. The remaining 31 districts, including Patna, will face humid heat. The department has issued an alert for next two days, warning of thunderstorms and lightning in most parts. Bihar recorded higher than normal rainfall this season. So far, the state has received 115.9 mm of rainfall, which is 170% higher than the normal average. As per the department, there is a continuous influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal, and pre-monsoon activities remain robust due to the formation of local weather systems.
