GAYA JI, July 20 -- An eye assistant at Jay Prakash Narayan (JPN) District Hospital in Gaya was arrested for allegedly demanding bribes from candidates to issue medical fitness certificates during the constable recruitment process, police said on Sunday. Gaya City Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhinav Kumar said medical boards were conducting fitness examinations of newly selected constables at the Police Lines on Friday when some candidates complained that they had been deliberately directed to JPN District Hospital under the threat of being declared medically unfit and were being extorted for money. Acting on the information, a police team led by the City SP launched an investigation. The probe revealed that eye assistant Satendra Kumar and his associates had allegedly demanded Rs.25,000 from each candidate in exchange for clearing their medical reports. The accused had already extorted money from some candidates, police said. Relevant documents were also seized during the investigation. A case has been registered at Rampur police station under Sections 11 and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 316 and 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Satendra Kumar has been arrested and is being produced before the Special Vigilance Court in Patna. Police have identified some of his alleged associates and are conducting raids to arrest them.
