Ex-IPS officer, former Union min to join BJP
PATNA, Aug. 19 -- Assam-cadre Indian Police service (IPS) officer Anand Mishra, who unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha election from his native Buxar after taking voluntary retirement, is set to join the BJP, the party he wanted to contest from, but was denied ticket.
Along with Mishra, former Union minister Nagmani would also join the BJP along with a few others at a 'Milan Samaroh' on Tuesday. Though not new to party hopping, having been a part of all the mainstream political parties of the state, Nagmani had been throwing ample indications recently about his affinity to the BJP and the NDA. He was earlier a part of the BJP.
Mishra, a popular local figure, had got over 50,000 votes as an Independent in 2024 in Buxar, a BJP bastion which the party lost to RJD's Sudhakar Singh. Later, he joined the Jan Suraaj Party and was very active as its youth wing president before he resigned in May this year. He has now decided to move to the BJP apparently on assurance of ticket for the Vidhan Sabha. Buxar Lok Sabha seat has traditionally been a stronghold of the BJP, with the party having lost just once here since 1996. However, in Assembly elections since 1972, BJP could win only thrice, while Congress has won it six times, including in 2015 and 2020.
Nagmani is set to join the BJP with his wife Suchitra Sinha, also a former minister. Nagmani has changed parties on many occasions. A senior BJP leader said the party would only grow from strength to strength. "More leaders are willing to join and time will show where the Grand Alliance (GA) stands," he added.
BJP media convener Danish Iqbal said Mishra, 2011-batch officer took voluntary retirement in late 2023 and Nagmani would join the party on Wednesday at a function in the party's office.
In an earlier development, former Buxar MP Lalmuni Choubey's son, Hemant Choubey, joined Jan Suraaj along with dozens of his supporters. Lalmuni Choubey, represented the Buxar seat in Lok Sabha for four consecutive terms in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. Hemant Choubey (47) belongs to Chainpur assembly constituency in Kaimur. "His joining will boost the party in Kaimur region," a party spokesperson said....
