PATNA, Aug. 6 -- Executive officers (EOs) of urban local bodies across the state on Wednesday suspended their indefinite strike after receiving assurances from urban development and housing minister Nitish Mishra on security and compensation demands arising from the brutal 'murder' of Dehri-Dalmianagar Nagar Parishad executive officer Vimal Kumar. A delegation of the Bihar Urban Service Association (BUSA), led by its president Sanjeev Kumar and vice-president Kishor Kunal, met the minister and pressed a set of demands that included adequate compensation for the slain officer's family, a government job for his widow, proper security at workplaces, arms licences for personal protection and a judicial inquiry into the killing. One officer, who formed part of the delegation, said the association decided to suspend the strike in view of the positive response. "The minister has assured to provide adequate security to EOs, apart from compensation and a job to the deceased family. We are expecting that the police investigation heads towards convincing and logical conclusions by August 31, otherwise we will again press for a judicial inquiry into the case," the officer said. Vimal Kumar, EO of Dehri-Dalmianagar Municipal Council in Rohtas district, was allegedly murdered on August 1 while travelling from Dehri to Patna after attending an official programme. His body was found with multiple injuries near Dhanauti Bridge under Barun police station in neighbouring Aurangabad district. He was rushed to a hospital in Jamuhar but was declared dead. He is survived by his wife Babita Kumari and two children. Police arrested his driver, Mithilesh Kumar, who later allegedly confessed to the crime. According to Magadh Range Inspector General Vikas Vaibhav, the driver cited accumulated resentment over long working hours, repeated denial of leave and an argument that erupted when he sought to stop the vehicle for a toilet break. Investigators said Mithilesh stopped the SUV, picked up an iron rod kept inside and repeatedly assaulted the officer, first inside the vehicle and then outside. The weapon was recovered from a nearby canal. An FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint by Babita Kumari. The widow publicly alleged a wider conspiracy, claiming that Dehri LJP (RV) MLA Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Sonu Singh had been harassing her husband with repeated demands for Rs.25-50 lakh and frequent calls for meetings, the last of which took place on July 29. The MLA has denied the allegations. Police maintain that the investigation remains focused on the driver's confession while examining all angles. The killing triggered widespread anger among municipal executive officers. BUSA, through a letter signed by dozens of officers, went on an indefinite strike since August 1, warning that work would remain suspended until security arrangements were restored. Officers had earlier held a condolence meeting at the deceased's Danapur residence and demanded a High Court-monitored probe. Internal differences briefly surfaced within the association, with one senior functionary submitting and then withdrawing his resignation, but the core demand for safety remained unanimous. Meanwhile, Babita Kumari met chief minister Samrat Choudhary at his residence. The CM assured the family that justice would be delivered and speedy trial would be conducted.
