BETTIAH, Aug. 10 -- A 20-feet stretch of the Tirhut main canal, which carries water diverted from the Gandak irrigation system, collapsed after being allegedly damaged by unidentified anti-social elements in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district early on Sunday, officials said. Pushkal Kumar, circle officer (CO), Marwan in Muzaffarpur district said the damage in Tirhut Main Canal was reported near Ward number 14 of Raksha village in Marwan block of Muzaffarpur district on Sunday early morning. "Following this, water gushed into the low lying area of Raksha," said circle officer, refusing a flood-like situation arising out of the incident. However, Pushkar (single name) executive engineer, Tirhut Nahar Pramandal, Muzaffarpur, described the damage as the handiwork of some anti-social elements. "We had been keeping a close watch on the embankment and there was nothing wrong with it until it was found damaged in the morning. Moreover, the water level in the canal was normal. It appears to be the handiwork of some anti-social elements, against whom we have approached police," he said. When contacted, Mukesh Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Panapur Kariyat, said a complaint has been received against unidentified persons for cutting the embankment of Tirhut Main Canal.
