PATNA, Sept. 7 -- Opposition leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday mounted a sharp attack on the state government and the Centre over the worsening flood situation, accusing the state administration of corruption, negligence and indifference while demanding urgent central intervention, including a special financial package and Indian Air Force (IAF) assistance. Leader of opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav led the charge, highlighting the plight of people in riverine diara areas submerged by the rising Ganga. Speaking to reporters in Patna, Yadav said: "Wherever the water level of the Ganga river has risen, the 'diara' areas, in particular, are completely submerged. People need relief supplies and shelter camps; ensuring their safety and protecting their lives and property is the government's responsibility." He added that many residents remain trapped in their homes or stranded on rooftops and that he is in constant touch with disaster management teams to arrange boats for evacuation. In a detailed post on X earlier in the day, Yadav painted a grim picture, claiming that 76% of the state's geographical area is flood-prone, with 19 districts currently under severe flood impact and more than 20 lakh people affected. He alleged that livestock belonging to cattle rearers had been swept away, public infrastructure had suffered heavy damage, and losses ran into thousands of crores. Labelling the state government 'bankrupt' and 'indifferent' to the suffering of flood victims, he demanded that the Centre immediately declare the floods a "national disaster," release a special assistance package of Rs.5,000 crore, and deploy Indian Air Force helicopters for relief and rescue operations. He also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Bihar without delay to assess the ground situation and ensure relief reaches the affected. RJD MP from Buxar, Sudhakar Singh, alleged massive corruption in flood management and relief work. Talking to media persons here, Singh said: "Floods are indeed coming due to the rains, but under the guise of floods, the government is certainly indulging in corruption. No one can have a very big contribution in bringing the floods, but looting is being done in the name of floods." He maintained that while rainfall was the natural cause, the administration was exploiting the crisis for personal gain. Patliputra MP Misa Bharti, who inspected flood-hit areas in Danapur and Maner diaras along with RJD MLA Bhai Birendra and the local block development officer, accused the administration of inadequate preparedness. Talking to reporters, she said embankments built to protect villages along the Punpun river had collapsed at several places, allowing a massive influx of water into Phulwari, Masaurhi, Naubatpur, Paliganj and other parts of her constituency. Media department head of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) Rajesh Rathore also criticised the state government for failing to provide relief to the marooned people.
