Death toll rises to seven in East Champaran hooch tragedy
BETTIAH, April 5 -- The death toll in the suspected hooch tragedy in Bihar's East Champaran district rose to seven after two more persons succumbed, even as police seized a large quantity of spirit laced with poisonous methanol during a raid near Piprakothi late Friday evening, officials said.
"Yes, two more people have died and thus the death toll has now risen to seven. Five people are still under treatment and the condition of two of them are critical and lying unconscious," said Harkishore Rai, deputy inspector general of police (DIG), Champaran range, who had earlier put the death toll in the incident at five on Friday.
"One of the deceased was unconscious since the first day and was put under a ventilator since then," he added.
The two deceased have been identified as Lal Kishore Yadav of Hardiya village, and Laddu Sah from Balganga.
Police said the victims had allegedly consumed spurious liquor in areas under Turkauliya and Raghunathpur police station limits on Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, East Champaran police have seized 702 litres of spirit r from Salempur in Piprakothi.
"The seized spirit has been found to be pure methanol, confirming that it was highly toxic and dangerous for human life. A portion of this consignment had already been supplied to Parsouna and Balganga," reads a police message shared in the WhatsApp group comprising police personnel and media representatives.
"Had this consignment been fully distributed, it could have led to the terrible consequences," said a police officer, who asked not to be named....
