Jamshedpur, June 5 -- Amid increasing cases of dog-bites and the approaching Supreme Court deadline, East Singhbhum district administration has initiated the process for protection and control of stray dogs by directing the urban local bodies (ULBs) to set up dog shelter homes, officials said. "Seperate dog shelter homes for strays and ensuring their vaccination and sterilisation will help us build a rabies-free society. I have directed ULBs like the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC), Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC), Jugsalai Nagar Parishad (JNP) and Chakulia Nagar Panchayat (CNP) to identify suitable landed plots and start the process for setting up shelters in Jamshedpur and Chakulia," Rajiv Ranjan, East Singhbhum deputy commissioner (DC), told HT. Officials said all these ULBs had been instructed to prepare detailed project reports covering availability of land, infrastructure facilities required and management structure at the earliest. The SC had on May 19, 2026 ordered to remove stray dogs from near hospitals, schools, bus depots, railway stations etc. and sought status report from all the states by August 7, 2026. The SC had also permitted the culling of rabies-infected and violent dogs.
