Darbhanga airport expansion plan gets Rs.245-cr funding boost
DARBHANGA, Sept. 8 -- Efforts to upgrade Darbhanga airport to international standards have gained momentum, with the entire sanctioned amount of Rs.245 crore for land acquisition now made available to the district administration.
District magistrate Kausal Kumar confirmed that the amount would be transferred to the district's Personal Deposit (PD) account. "Rs.10 crore has already been received, and the remaining funds will arrive by Monday. Once received, compensation for 90 acres of land required for runway extension will be disbursed to the respective landowners without delay," he said.
Airport director Naveed Nazim said the Instrument Landing System (ILS) had been made operational since July this year. He added that work was underway to install the CAT II lighting system on 24 acres of land, which would significantly improve flight operations during low-visibility conditions, down to 400 metres.
The CAT II guidance and control system at Darbhanga Air Force Station is being implemented under the Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI-2) scheme to enable safe landings in adverse weather. While the Indian Air Force (IAF) has already installed CAT II approach lights up to 300 metres on its land, civil operations require 900 metres. To bridge the gap, IAF has agreed to extend the system by installing lights on an additional 600 metres through its MAFI vendor, M/s Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).
