Custodial death: 6 police personnel suspended
BETTIAH, Oct. 14 -- Six police personnel, including two sub-inspectors (SI) and four constables, were suspended on Monday evening after the alleged custodial death of a 25-year-old man arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act by Sahodra police in West Champaran, police said.
The deceased was been identified as Dilshad Ansari, son of Akbar Ansari, a resident of Badhayi Tola Auraiya which falls under Banuchhapar police station area in Bettiah.
In an official statement issued on Monday late evening, Bettiah police said that six police personnel have been suspended with immediate effect following the incident that occurred in the police custody. Those suspended have been identified as sub inspector Ravi Shankar Kumar and Arun Kumar, besides constables namely Saudagar Kumar Yadav, Raj Kumar Rishi, Kundan Kumar and Suman Kumar. All six were attached to Sahodra police station in West Champaran, where the 25-year-old man was an accused in NDPS Act case number 65/25 lodged on August 8, 2025.
"After his arrest from Banuchhapar, Dilshad was being taken to Sahodra police station when he jumped from the running vehicle and as a result suffered grievous injuries. He was rushed to subdivisional hospital at Narkatiaganj and later referred to GMCH at Bettiah where he was declared brought dead by the doctors," said police in its statement. Sikarpur's station house officer (SHO) Manoj Kumar Singh said Dilshad attempted to flee police custody at Koigigawa village under his police station and died due to injuries sustained while jumping from the police vehicle.
"We have lodged two cases -- an unnatural death (UD) case number 15/26 and another case number (982/26) related to his attempt to flee from police custody in this connection with Sikarpur police," said the station house officer.
However, the deceased's family members have demanded a high level inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death and refused to accept the police claims that the 25-year-old man had tried to flee from a running vehicle after his arrest.
"It was around 2am on Monday, a police team raided our house and took my husband in their custody, assuring the family members to free him by morning after interrogation. But, in the morning, a caller from Banuchhapar police station asked us to come to the GMCH, saying my husband had fallen sick. We found him lying dead in the hospital when we reached there," said Nagma Khatoon, the deceased's wife.
"My son died after he was hit hard on his head by police," alleged Akbar Ansari, the deceased's father, demanding a high level inquiry into the death....
