CPI-ML agrees for 20 seats, but INDIA bloc tiff persists
PATNA, Oct. 19 -- Even as the CPI(ML)-Liberation announced its list of candidates under the INDIA bloc's seat-sharing arrangement, declaring that it would contest 20 seats, tussles among the allies - particularly between the RJD and the Congress - continued to persist on Saturday.
The ML, which had contested 19 seats in the 2020 assembly polls, has been allotted 20 seats this time of which 14 candidates have already filed their nomination for the first phase. All the six other candidates for the seats going to polls in the second phase of election on November 11 also have filed their papers including party's sitting MLA Mehbob Alam, who filed his papers today.
" There is no dispute on any seat allotted to us with other partners in the alliance. Seat sharing deal with ML in the INDIA bloc has been sealed," said Pervej, senior party leader.
However, the glitches over seat sharing between RJD and Congress still continues with sources stating the senior most constituent RJD is still firm on its demand for Vaishali and Lalganj seat though Congress too has put its candidate from there. There are also disputes over other seats including Kahalgaon. In the Bachwara seat, CPI and Congress have both put their nominees.
Insiders in the RJD said the party had sought Vaishali and Lalganj by asking Congress to leave the seats so that there are high chances of winnability by putting strong candidates against NDA nominees.
One RJD leader said Vaishali is a stronghold of the NDA with leaders like union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai, JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha and Rashtriya Lok Manch chief Upendra Kushwaha and constituencies like Lalganj and Vaishali have a sizeable Kushwaha population apart from upper caste Rajputs, Bhumihars and Brahmins.
"We has fielded a Kushwaha candidate from Vaishali and upper caste Bhumihar candidate from Lalganj as a strategy to woo the upper castes as well as Kushwaha voters. Now, if we have to fight against the NDA, this is the best opiton. But Congress too has fielded its candidate from Lalganj which may upset the social equations," said the RJD leader, in the know of the matter.
Insiders in the opposition Grand Alliance (GA) said the RJD and Congress are still to come to an understanding over the Kahalgaon seat and few more seats going to polls in the second phase. Today, Congress state president Rajesh Ram attacked the RJD for its decision to field a candidate from his traditional Kutumba seat.
"The RJD and Congress appear to be playing the pressure game by putting candidates in those seats where there is dispute. This is only going to harm the coalition and send a message of disunity within the INDIA bloc," said another GA leader.
RJD spokesperson Chittarangan Gagan, however, said talks between the RJD and Congress were still going on and there would be a seat sharing deal for all 243 seats among all partners. He highlighted that RJD and allies have already sealed a deal with Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP) while there is no dispute with CPI, CPI-ML(liberation) and other allies. " We will have a final seat sharing deal soon. There are certain issues, which would be sorted out before the last date of withdrawal of the first phase on October 20," he claimed....
