Cops in uniform pulled off Rs.1.44-cr heist on train: Police
PATNA, Dec. 31 -- Four Bihar police personnel in uniform stole 1-kg gold worth Rs.1.44-crore from an employee of a Bengal-based gold trader aboard the Howrah-Jodhpur-Bikaner-Express between Gaya and Koderma Junction on November 20, a police probe has found.
The police hasn't yet released the identity of the accused policemen who have been absconding after the robbery, but a senior police officer said on Tuesday that they are likely to be nabbed within 48 hours.
According to police, the businessman Manoj Soni from Naskar Para Bazar, Howrah (West Bengal), lodged a case with Malipanchghora police station, Howrah, suspecting that his employee Dhananjay Shaswat, a resident of Asansol, who was carrying the gold to Jaipur and was robbed, was playing foul with him by narrating a cock and bull story.
When Shaswat kept repeating the story, said police, Soni contacted Bihar Railway Police and got a case registered against unidentified persons wearing police uniforms as well as against Saswat. It was then brought to the notice of Rail IG P Kannan.
The Rail IG took it seriously and handed over the investigation to Rail SP (Patna) Inamul Haque Mengnoo, who carried out a thorough probe after visiting the incident spot on Monday.
"It was found that four constables, who were deputed at Gaya Junction but were not part of any escort party, were found involved in the robbing. The further probe confirmed their nexus with some criminals who informed them that a man was carrying gold in the train. They boarded the train and carried out the operation (robbery) when the train was between Koderma (Jharkhand) and Gaya (Bihar) on the pretext of conducting a routine journey search," a police officer part of the probe said.
According to the complaint filed by Soni with the Malipanchghora police station, Howrah), the incident occurred around 5am on November 20 when the train was departing from Koderma Railway station. "Four men in police uniform entered the compartment, searched Shaswat's belongings and recovered gold from him and took him with them till the gate of the compartment. The uniformed robbers stopped the train by pulling the chain somewhere between Gaya and Koderma and took him (Shahswat) to some blind spot and robbed all his belongings. They then took him to Gaya junction by giving him a return ticket from Gaya to Howrah asking him to keep mum. Even two of them accompanied him till Dhanbad and then they disappeared," read the complaint lodged with police.
Meanwhile, SHO of Gaya GRP Rajesh Kumar Singh registered a fresh FIR against unidentified cops under Section 309 (4) of BNS. "The case is being investigated by SI Virendra Prasad and raids are being conducted to arrest the suspects involved in the incident," the SHO told HT....
