Jamshedpur, July 26 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested deputy chief engineer (signals and telecommunications) of Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway (SER) Satyam Kumar after catching him red-handed taking Rs.4 lakh in bribe from a Kolkata-based private company M/S MRT Signals Ltd at Howrah station, officials said on Saturday. According to the CBI, incriminating documents and digital evidence were also seized in subsequent raids at different locations in Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal. "CBI registered a case on Friday against the arrested accused deputy chief engineer (signals and telecommunications) of the Chakradharpur Division of SER, along with two representatives of M/S MRT Signals Ltd on allegations that the accused public servant, in conspiracy with other accused persons, had been obtaining undue advantage from M/S MRT Signals Ltd, Kolkata in lieu of extending undue favours in processing and approval of contract variation file related to Price Variation Clause (PVC) and other matters relating to signals and telecommunications works being executed by the company under the Chakradharpur Division of the SER," a CBI press release stated on Saturday. "A trap was laid and the accused public servant caught red-handed from Howrah station while accepting Rs.4 lakh as illegal gratification from the representatives of the complaint company. The Rs.4 lakh was recovered and seized. It is further alleged that the said accused had earlier obtained Rs.5 lakh during May, 2026 for extending undue favours in connection with the processing of the contract variation file," a CBI official said. According to the CBI, the public servant had agreed to come to Kolkata to accept the pending installment of the gratification and subsequently a trap was laid. "This is the first CBI trap case relating to bribery of public servants in West Bengal after many years. Incriminating documents and digital evidence have been seized during searches in the residential and office premises of the accused persons at multiple locations in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar. Further investigation is continuing," the official said....
