ARA, Sept. 21 -- The Bhojpur district administration has launched a crackdown on twenty weighbridges ('Dharam Kanta') in the Chandi area, citing widespread irregularities in the weighing of sand, officials said on Sunday. According to a senior officer, the administration has initiated the process to seal these weighbridges and submitted a proposal to revoke their operating licenses. A fine of Rs.1.60 crore has been imposed on the twenty weighbridges located along the stretch between Bhadwar and Khangaon villages. The action follows a series of raids conducted under the orders of district magistrate Manesh Kumar Meena and Superintendent of Police Awadhesh Dixit. Sadar SDPO (2) Ranjit Kumar Singh confirmed complaints that these facilities were facilitating the theft, storage, and sale of sand under the guise of legitimate weighing. Following the instructions of the DM and SP, a team was formed under the leadership of the Sadar SDO, Sadar SDPO (2) and the mining officer. The team raided all the weighing machines located in the Chandi police station area. The complaint regarding the theft, storage and sale of sand from vehicles loaded with sand at twenty weighing machines located between Bhadwar and Khangaon villages was found to be true. FIR has been lodged against all the weighing machines operators at the Chandi police station. Fines ranging from five and a half lakh to thirteen lakh rupees have also been imposed against each of weighbridges. Preparations are underway to seal all these weighing scales. A proposal to revoke their licenses is being sent to the District Magistrate. Meanwhile, this action by the district administration and police has created panic among the weighing scale operators involved in sand theft. Officials said that action is being taken against these weighing scales, inlcuding, Jai Maa Vaishno Digital Weighing, Kunj Digital Weighing, Shri Aranya Digital Weighing, Pihu Digital Weighing, Balaji Digital Weighing, Jai Maa Jagdamba Digital Weighing. Other weighbridges thta will fall under the radar also include, Maa Manokamna Digital Weighing, Rudra Digital Weighing, Suraj Digital Weighing, Jai Maa Bhagwati Digital Weighing, Siddhi Vinayak Weighing, Jai Bajrang Digital Weighing, Jai Mata Di Digital Weighing, Saumya Digital Weighing, Maa Vaishnavi Digital Weighing, Jai Bajrang Bali Digital Weighing, Jai Mahavir Digital Weighing, Sheetala Digital Weighing, Ganpati Weighing, and Maa Mangala Bhavani Weighing, officials said. The crackdown is a critical part of the state's broader effort to choke off the revenue flow of local sand cartels. By altering weights, operators have historically facilitated over-loading, causing massive losses to the state exchequer and damaging public infrastructure.
