Asim Mondal's squad trapped amid intensified J'khand-Bengal police op
Jamshedpur, Aug. 10 -- Jharkhand and West Bengal police have launched a joint operation to capture or neutralise the last remaining major squad of outlawed LWE outfit CPI (Maoist) led by its central committee member (CCM) Asim Mondal alias Akash alias Timir on the hills on the borders of the two states from Dalma Hills in East Singhbhum of Jharkhand to hilly areas near Bandwan and Belpahari police stations in Purulia and Jhargram districts of West Bengal, officials said on Sunday.
Officials said about nine hardcore Maoists led by Mondal, carrying a bounty of Rs.1 crore, Ramprasad Mardi alias Sachin, with a bounty of Rs.15 lakh, his wife Mita alias Nayantara alias Jhumpa, with a bounty of Rs.10 lakh, arrested Madan Mahato's wife Joba alias Lata, Sameer Mahato alias Mangal and Gauri alias Bulu, with a bounty of Rs.5 lakh each, Mangal's wife Malti Murmu, Prakash Mahato alias Atul and Samir Soren have been surrounded by over 3,000 jawans of the East Singhbhum police, CoBRA, CRPF and Jharkhand STF on the hillocks on bordering areas of Galudih and Ghatshila PS limits.
"West Bengal police have sealed the borders on their side while our forces are continuing operations in search of the last major Maoist group led by Asim Mondal and Ramprasad Mardi, shifting from one hillock to another on the borders of the two states. They have been active in these hilly forested areas in Dalma, Patamda, Boram, Galudih and Ghatshila since the 1990s during the Lalgarh siege. Our anti-Naxal operations will continue until the last Naxal is either captured or eliminated," Shubham Khandelwal, Jamshedpur rural SP, said.
On the other side of the border, the West Bengal police have launched 'Operation Aakash' in hilly jungles under Bandwan and Belpahari PS areas.
"Bankura range DIG Abhishek Modi visited the Kuchia camp of the state police in Bandwan on Thursday along with Purulia SP Sunny Raj. Subsequently the operation has started to capture Asim Mondal, hailing from Uttar Phulchak village under Chandrakona PS in West Midnapore district. Key leads have been found from Madan Mahato alias Shankar, Ravi Sardar alias Sagar alias Biren Singh and his wife Meena Pahariya arrested on Wednesday in Jharkhand," a police officer of Bandwan said.
Meanwhile, villagers in Mirgitand, Kasidih and Narsinghpur villages under Ghatshila Block of East Singhbhum have accused joint forces of and manhandling them during searches in their villages on Saturday wee hours.
"Police came to the village around 3.30 AM on Saturday and took all the men out at the centre of the village and manhandled them while asking them about whereabouts of the Naxals. They showed photos and asked us to identify them. They checked Aadhaar cards, mobile phones, searched our houses," Motilal Kisku, a resident of Mirgitand, told the media.
"The police should come for searches in the morning. We work hard throughout the day in our farmlands. We rest in the night and the police are dragging us out," Subhash Mardi of Kasidih village said....
