Ara Municipal Corporation employees end strike
ARA, May 19 -- The indefinite strike by Ara Municipal Corporation employees, which had severely disrupted the city's sanitation system, finally ended on Monday. After four days of continuous agitation and intense heat at the main gate of the corporation office, sanitation workers, drivers, supervisors, sweepers, and daily wage labourers decided to end the strike after nearly two hours of talks with the corporation administration.
Officials said an agreement was reached on the workers' six-point demands, sparking jubilation among them. They raised slogans in support of union president Pushpa Singh and celebrated the victory by applying abir-gulal to each other.
The strike had completely disrupted sanitation in 45 wards of the city. Garbage piled up everywhere, causing significant inconvenience. Foul smell lingered in many neighborhoods, raising fears of the spread of disease. Municipal tractors and garbage collection vehicles remained virtually out of service for four days.
Pushpa Singh, president of the Municipal Employees' Union, said the employees' primary demand was the implementation of the differential amount between the sixth pay scale and the seventh pay scale. She said the municipal administration had assured that employees' files would be prepared and sent to Patna. The differential amount will be paid to the employees after receiving confirmation from the government. A four-month deadline has been set for this. After this, the process of implementing the seventh pay scale would also begin.
She said the second important demand was the reinstatement of long-serving employees on contract. The administration had assured to send a letter to the urban development department regarding this matter....
