KISHANGANJ, Dec. 27 -- The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Congress have joined hands to protest the proposed forward Army base in Kishanganj district, alleging that the move is anti-farmer. The proposed base is aimed at strengthening the defence of the Siliguri Corridor, a narrow and strategic land link to the northeast, popularly known as the Chicken's Neck. Both parties have announced plans to launch protests against any move to establish the Army camp on farmers' land in Kishanganj. The proposed base is to be set up along the Indo-Nepal border, close to the Indo-Bangladesh border, with land acquisition spread across two blocks-Bahadurganj and Kochadhaman. While AIMIM MLAs have written to the district magistrate (DM) urging him to halt the process, Congress MP from Kishanganj, Mohammad Javed, has met the Union defence minister, requesting him to reconsider the proposal. Both parties have claimed that the land acquisition would render hundreds of farmers landless. While acknowledging the importance of national security, Dr Javed said, "The interests of farmers cannot be sacrificed." Echoing similar concerns, AIMIM MLA from Bahadurganj, Tauseef Alam, said, "We are not against the camp, but it should be established only on government land." Leaders of both parties warned that they would take the issue to the streets if their demands were ignored. Meanwhile, the land acquisition process has already begun in the district despite protests, and administrative sources said it is likely to be completed soon....
