58-yr-old man struck by relief supplies, dies
PATNA/SARAN, Oct. 4 -- A 58-year-old man displaced by flooding died on Friday in Saran district after allegedly being struck by relief supplies dropped from an Indian Air Force helicopter, officials said on Saturday.
The incident occurred in Parshurampur village, where residents displaced by the rising Gandak river had gathered near a relief camp to receive dry rations.
According to family members, Singh was struck by at least two 5kg packets, one hitting his head and another his chest, as the helicopter conducted a low-altitude drop. He collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Saran district magistrate Vaibhava Srivastava confirmed the death on Saturday and stated that the circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation. Officials have provided initial financial assistance to the family for funeral expenses.
Amnour station house officer Vimlesh Kumar said the body showed no visible external injury marks.
According to officials, villagers offered conflicting versions. Some insisted the packets hit Singh directly; others suggested he may have suffered a heart attack as the material landed nearby.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination, which authorities said would determine the precise cause of death. A case has been registered and an investigation is under way, police added.
In a related incident from Parshurampur, a 45-year-old woman and her children were injured when the helicopter's downdraft blew debris toward them as it flew at a low altitude.
The woman, who was on the terrace of her house, reportedly sustained a fracture, while her children suffered minor injuries....
