5 kids drown in 15-ft deep water-filled pit
MADHUBANI, June 4 -- Five children from the same family drowned in a rainwater-filled pit in Kerwar village under Patauna police station of Bisfi block in Bihar's Madhubani district on Wednesday, while another child was rescued, police said.
According to residents, the children had gone to a field about 500 metres from their home around noon and entered the 15-feet-deep pit for a bath. The pit had been dug two years ago for soil extraction and had since turned into a deep water body during the monsoon.
"Rinku Kumari (17) and Prashant Kumar (13), both siblings, and their cousins Abhishek Kumar (14), Sonali Kumari (11) and Sneha Kumari (12) drowned, while one child was rescued and is undergoing treatment," said Santosh Kumar Singh, circle officer of Bisfi block.
"Villagers made desperate efforts to pull the children out of the water. Unfortunately, by the time they were rescued, five of them had already lost their lives," a local said.
On information, senior administrative and police officials reached the spot. Madhubani district magistrate Anand Sharma expressed deep sorrow and ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the deaths. "This is an extremely painful and heartbreaking incident for the entire district. The administration stands with the affected families," he said.
"Action will be taken against those found responsible for the incident after the inquiry is completed," he said. Also, under the provisions of the disaster management department, an ex-gratia of Rs.4 lakh was handed over to the next of kin of each victim within five hours of the incident....
