21 girls rescued from traffickers in Saran
PATNA, May 15 -- Bihar police on Thursday rescued 21 girls aged between 10 and 17, including seven from Nepal, from 13 orchestra groups in Saran district and arrested 11 people on charges of alleged trafficking and exploitation of children, officers said.
Police said that they were either lured with high-paying jobs or betrayed by their acquaintances and trafficked from their native states to work in these orchestras. The rescued girls were trafficked from Nepal, Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
The operation, based on information provided by Association for Voluntary Action (AVA), was led by Saran SP Vineet Kumar and carried out jointly by Saran Police, the Anti Human Trafficking Unit, local police teams, and members of AVA and Narayani Sewa Sansthan.
During preliminary counselling, several girls alleged that they were forced to perform to sexually explicit Bhojpuri songs or long hours at weddings and other events where many of them also faced sexual harassment and abuse from the audience.
One of the girls from Jharkhand said that when she was 15 years old, she was approached by a man who promised her a better life and married her, only to abandon her soon after. He introduced her to a woman who convinced her to accompany her for work but 'sold' her.
Dhananjay Tingal, AVA executive director, said, "The phenomenal work being done by the government and the police in rescuing children and prosecuting traffickers now needs to be complemented by fast-track trials and release of compensation by courts."
On Tuesday, the AVA and Narayani Sewa Sansthan along with police and AHTU members rescued 44 girls in Gopalganj, from 15 orchestra groups during a nightlong operation.
The joint team also arrested 22 individuals in connection with the case....
