PATNA, July 9 -- Two people were allegedly gunned down by a group of 8 to 10 unidentified bike-borne assailants at Namapur Dariyapur village, under the Chakmehsi police station area of Samastipur district, police said on Wednesday. Police said the incident took place late Tuesday when Prabhat Chaudhary, a resident of Nimachak Haidar village and Sunny Kumar of Belsandi village, were standing in a secluded area when the accused opened fire on them indiscriminately and fled. Both died on the spot. After receiving information from locals, police reached the spot, took possession of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examinations. Investigators have launched a probe and are examining CCTV footage from the village and nearby roads to identify and trace the attackers. Police said Prabhat was allegedly involved in the illicit liquor trade and had previously faced several criminal cases, including those involving alleged illegal liquor smuggling and Arms Act violations. Police suspect financial dealings related to the illicit trade or old enmity might be behind the deaths. Sadar DSP-2 Sanjay Kumar told HT that police seized two loaded magazines and empty cartridges from the spot. Meanwhile, Prabhat's father, Sanjay Chaudhary, alleged that the attack was part of a conspiracy, claiming his son was lured out by a phone call before the attack. The family members alleged that Prabhat left home in his car around 7 pm for some routine work. Sunny and two others accompanied him. The family only found out about Prabhat's death later that night. Their two accomplices, who were also in the car, managed to escape unhurt. "He had previously survived a life-threatening attack inside the court premises on August 26, 2023. One Prabhat Tiwari was injured in that incident while mastermind Ram Babu Rai, the then RJD block president of Kalyanpur block, was sent to jail. This time, he was shot dead," he said....
