2 Drown Fleeing Police Raid; Protests Erupt
PATNA, Oct. 6 -- Protests erupted on the outskirts of Patna on Monday as locals blocked the Bihta-Sarmera National Highway, demanding an impartial probe into the deaths of two people who allegedly drowned while fleeing a police raid the previous day, police on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as 62-year-old Ramu Manjhi of Behrawan Chakia and 17-year-old Akash Kumar Manjhi of Hasanpura. Their bodies were placed on the highway by agitating locals, who effectively blocked traffic starting at 10 a.m, police said.
The incident stems from a police operation on Sunday in Behrawan Chakia, a village under the Pipra police station area in the Masaurhi sub-division. Acting on instructions from senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kartikey K Sharma, a large police contingent entered the village to conduct a raid against illegal liquor manufacturing. According to police, this operation followed an attack by villagers on a separate police team the previous Saturday. During Sunday's raid, villagers reportedly pelted stones at the officers, damaging two police vehicles and a motorcycle. Police arrested 38 people, including 32 women, and claimed to have recovered a country-made pistol and three live cartridges from one of the accused's homes....
