13 killed, 30 injured in bus-truck-pickup collision in Katihar
KATIHAR, April 12 -- At least 13 people, including five women and two children, were killed and over twenty were injured when a speeding pickup van coming from Jharkhand collided with a bus on NH-31 near Basgarha under Korha police station at 6:30pm in Bihar's Katihar district on Saturday.
Around 30 others were injured in the accident, said the police that rushed to the site as soon it was informed of the horrific mishap.
Katihar superintendent of police (SP) Shikhar Choudhary who also rushed to the site immediately, said, "Right now identification of the victims is going on and the injured have been rushed to the government medical college and hospital in Purnea for treatment."
He also confirmed that 13 people were killed in the accident.
On the other hand police sources said that the death toll would increase as the condition of several injured is critical.
According to the report the pick-up van was heavily crowded with over two dozen passengers in it and they were returning to their homes in Katihar district from Jharkhand when it collided with a bus while overtaking the bus.
Meanwhile the police have seized both the vehicles involved in the accident.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the deaths of people in the accident and announced an exgratia for the kin of the deceased.
"The chief minister... announced an ex gratia of Rs.2 lakh each to the immediate family members of the deceased from the CM's relief fund. He also announced Rs.50,000 each to those injured in the accident," an official release said.
Kumar also directed officials to ensure better treatment for those who are injured," it said....
