PATNA, Oct. 12 -- Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday backed the government's handling of the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) protest in New Delhi, two days after questioning the cancellation of trains ahead of the demonstration and asserting that no attempt to restrict transport could stop the country's youth. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader, an NDA ally, said peaceful protests were a fundamental democratic right, but those using young people to incite violence and create anarchy must be identified and stopped. "India is the world's largest democracy, where peaceful protests are a fundamental democratic right. However, those who use demonstrations to incite violence and create anarchy must be identified and stopped," Paswan told reporters at the Patna airport. "Parties such as the CJP were seeking to push their agenda towards anarchy through the youth. It is important to highlight such elements and take action against them," he added. He, however, opposed the use of force against protesting students, saying their voices should be heard rather than met with police batons. Paswan said his party and he had never supported violence, but added that police might have resorted to force if the situation threatened to deteriorate and leave them with no alternative to restore order. "I do not support the use of force against young people. Their voices should be heard, not met with police force and batons," he said. Paswan's largely pro-government stance on the issue of the protests marked a shift from his comments on October 9, when he questioned the cancellation of trains to Delhi ahead of the CJP's October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar. The cancellations had affected passengers and raised questions about attempts to restrict the movement of protesters. "These are the youth of India - nothing can stop them. How many trains can anyone really stop? How much connectivity can be blocked? How many roads can be jammed?" he had said on the sidelines of a convocation ceremony in Sonipat, Haryana. The Magadh Express, Tejas Rajdhani Express, Sampoorna Kranti Express and Amrit Bharat Express were among the four trains cancelled between Patna and Delhi last Friday. On Sunday, Paswan said granting permission for peaceful protests was part of democratic practice, but objected to what he described as attempts by anti-social elements to exploit youth-led movements and disturb public order. "Democracy can never end in India," he said. He also criticised the Congress over its protests concerning the Election Commission, saying the party should raise its concerns through constitutional channels....
