'nal-jal water to blame': 2 die, 70 fall sick after diarrhoea spurt
DARBHANGA, Sept. 21 -- A major outbreak of diarrhoea has been reported from Sara Mohanpur village under Sadar block of Darbhanga district, where two persons, including a woman, have died and more than 70 people have taken ill, an official said on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Laxmi Devi (40) and Deep Lal Yadav (60), both residents of ward number 5 of the village. According to villagers, the first case was reported on September 14 when Arjun Paswan complained of diarrhoea and vomiting. Within a week, the infection spread rapidly across the ward.
Rajkumar Shah, husband of Laxmi Devi, said that his wife was referred to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). "She was stable till morning but died after drinking water on Friday morning," he said.
Civil surgeon Arun Kumar confirmed the outbreak but refrained from elaborating on the present situation.
A special medical camp has been set up in the village, while patients with severe symptoms were shifted to a 'temporary ward' at nearby Gangwara Cancer Hospital and DMCH. Medicines, ORS, zinc tablets and disinfectants have been distributed, while bleaching powder and lime were sprinkled in the affected localities.
"The situation is now under control as the spread has weakened and most patients are recovering," said an official, preferring not to be named
Fear of the outbreak forced many villagers to temporarily leave for their relatives' houses. Health teams have advised residents to maintain hygiene and boil drinking water. Awareness drives are also being conducted.
