'Lalu-Rabri security cover modified, not downgraded'
PATNA, June 19 -- The Bihar Police refuted claims that security cover for RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his wife and former chief minister, and current leader of opposition in legislative council, Rabri Devi had been reduced or withdrawn and said that the nature of security arrangements had been modified in accordance with regulations and routine security reviews, officers said on Thursday.
Police issued a statement on its X handle late Wednesday, hours after Lalu confirmed that his security cover, as well as that of Rabri, has been officially withdrawn. The RJD chief had also claimed that former CM Nitish Kumar was behind downgrading of his security and that of his wife.
Police said in accordance with provisions of the Special Protection Group Act, 2010, a 'BR Car' (Ballistic Resistant Car) has been provided for security purposes, in addition to guards from Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP), bodyguards, house and escort guards, and pilot vehicles.
Additionally, in light of the assessed requirements, security personnel have also been deployed in plain clothes as part of the Special Branch (SB) component. Security has been provided to both the dignitaries in accordance with the assessed requirements, Bihar Police said.
Under the new security directives, former CM Rabri got altogether 16 police personnel, including 10 BSAP jawans for house guard, three plain clothes women cops from Patna Police, three uniform security guards, a bullet-proof car and pilot vehicle from the headquarters.
Similarly, Lalu got 12 police personnel, including 10 BSAP jawans for house guard and two bodyguards from Patna police, a bullet-proof car and pilot vehicle from headquarters. When either of them travels, an escort party and pilot vehicle are arranged by the Patna Police.
The order was issued by the home department (special branch) following a state security committee meeting at the police headquarters on June 5. LoP in the assembly and former deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav will continue to get Y+ cover as before.
Earlier on June 5, the Bihar government officially downgraded the Z+ and Z security covers previously provided to Lalu and Rabri. The security of Lalu's elder son Tej Pratap Yadav has also been cut. He enjoyed Y+ cover.
In response to the downgrade, Lalu and his family voluntarily sent back the remaining government security personnel. Following this, the RJD party workers took up positions outside the family's residence at 10, Circular Road, Patna, to provide their own informal protection to their leaders....
