Noida/Ghaziabad, Aug. 10 -- Heavy overnight rains from Friday night into Saturday lashed Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, bringing traffic to a crawl, inundating roads, and flooding basements and homes across multiple localities. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gautam Buddh (GB) Nagar, comprising Noida and Greater Noida, recorded "moderate" rainfall in the 24-hour period leading up to 8.30am on Saturday and "heavy" rainfall of 71mm from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Ghaziabad, meanwhile, logged 37.5mm of rainfall between 8.30am on Friday and 8.30am on Saturday. GB Nagar recorded a maximum temperature of 25.5degC, with the minimum at 24.9degC. Ghziabad saw a maximum of 25.5degC. While no fresh warning was issued for Sunday, the IMD predicted generally cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain in the coming days. "Heavy rain is currently lashing several parts of Delhi and NCR, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, and is likely to subside today. The monsoon trough is presently lying close to the Himalayan foothills. Now, another spell of rain will commence over Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, while rainfall activity in the hilly regions is expected to intensify again after two days," said Mahesh Palawat, vice president, meteorology & climate change, Skymet Weather. In Noida and Greater Noida, waterlogging was reported from Sector 21, Sector 62 (opposite Fortis Hospital), Sector 73, Sector 75, Surajpur, Sector 16B in Greater Noida West, and Gaur City 2. The service road between Ajnara Le Garden and Gulshan Bellina was submerged, forcing long detours. "The waterlogging opposite Fortis Hospital is a recurring nightmare during monsoon," said Sandeep Yadav, a Sector 62 commuter. Basement flooding affected several societies, including Supertech Cape Town, Pan Oasis, Paras Tierra in Sector 137, Shri Radha Sky Gardens, Mahagun Mywoods, and Supertech Ecovillage 1. "Our basement parking is flooded again. Water seepage has damaged my car, and this is the second time in two weeks," said Atul Sharma, a Paras Tierra resident. "In Supertech Ecovillage 1, the water rises so quickly during heavy rain that we can't even enter the basement to remove our vehicles," said Ankur Bhatia. Aims Green Avenue resident Ankur Bhatia added that incomplete drainage leaves the society flooded after every downpour. "It becomes a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes. We have complained to the builder, but no concrete action has been taken," he said. Residents claimed repeated attempts to contact the Paras Tierra Apartment Owners Association (AOA) had failed. AOA secretary Nand Kishore Sharma dismissed the allegations, attributing the flooding to the builder's inadequate drainage. "We are in talks with authorities to fix this on priority, and housekeeping teams are already on the ground," he said. Officials from the Noida Authority said quick-response teams were deployed to pump out water. "Our teams are attending to waterlogged locations, but some areas face delays due to drainage choke points," said RP Singh, deputy general manager (sewer). In Ghaziabad, heavy rain coinciding with Rakshabandhan left much of the city under water. In Vijay Nagar's Bagu locality, resident Sanjay Solomon said 1.5 feet of water entered his home, damaging furniture, appliances, and 500 kg of wheat. "Nearly 300-400 households here faced the same problem," he said. Sanjay Mishra from Shastri Nagar said his home's ground floor was flooded. "Instead of celebrating the festival, we were busy draining water. This has been happening for years," he said. In Indirapuram's Ahimsa Khand, the boundary wall of Niho Scottish Garden collapsed under rainwater pressure, damaging 5-7 cars and flooding a block basement with up to three feet of water. Even the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation and Ghaziabad Development Authority headquarters at Navyug Market were inundated. Former councillor Zakir Ali Saifi filmed the waterlogged premises. In Noida-Greater Noida, long traffic jams were reported around Gaur City, near 14th Avenue, the DFCCIL underpass, and the Gulistanpur underpass. DCP traffic Lakhan Singh Yadav said waterlogging at Sakipur underpass caused small vehicles to stall. "Adequate police personnel have been deployed at key choke points," he said. In Ghaziabad, traffic was hit on NH-9, Lal Kuan, UP-Gate, Mohan Nagar, GT Road, and Hapur Road. Traffic police in both cities said personnel were deployed to keep vehicles moving despite the flooding. Ghaziabad's additional DCP (traffic) Sacchidanand said they "coordinated with civic bodies to speed up water removal." Municipal officials in Ghaziabad, meanwhile, said pumps were deployed at all 55 low-lying locations to flush out water....
