new delhi, Aug. 23 -- Lawyers in Delhi's six district courts struck work on Friday, opposing a notification cleared by LG VK Saxena that allows police officers to depose before courts via video conferencing from police stations. Advocates said the move undermines fair trial standards, warning it could paralyse trials and compromise the rights of the accused. "Anyone can prompt a police officer from behind the camera on what to say. Physical presence is crucial to observe demeanour and responses," said Tarun Rana, additional secretary general of the coordination committee of all bar associations. Other bar leaders echoed this, arguing that the notification erodes transparency in witness testimony. They maintained that while strikes have been held illegal by the Supreme Court, this protest concerns the "administration of justice" itself.
