MUMBAI, Oct. 1 -- A 25-year-old woman was killed and another injured after a water tanker allegedly hit them while they were crossing the road at Mahim Causeway on Tuesday night, police said. The accident led to a protest by residents on Wednesday evening, with locals raising concerns over the alleged absence of traffic police at the spot.
The deceased, Anjali Kharwa, 25, and another woman were crossing the road when the tanker allegedly rammed into them, according to Mahim police. Kharwa died at the spot, while the other woman was injured and taken to Sion Hospital. Police said her condition had improved.
The tanker driver, Ajay Mahadik, was taken into custody and a case was registered under Section 106 of the BNS for causing death by negligence. Police later served Mahadik a notice to appear before the investigating officer and allowed him to leave.
Residents protested at the spot on Wednesday evening, alleging that traffic police were not present when the accident occurred and raising concerns about safety for pedestrians crossing the busy road....
