Rs.50L transaction leads police to close aide who planned to murder Vasai businessman
MUMBAI, Aug. 3 -- It was a Rs.50 lakh transaction, not the bullets fired at him, that exposed the alleged conspiracy to kill Vasai businessman Mohansingh Laxmansingh Parmar, with police naming his trusted business partner as the mastermind behind the plot.
Waliv police said the breakthrough came after investigators noticed an earlier transfer of Rs.50 lakh from Parmar to Sagar Bhanusali, who, they allege, had orchestrated the July 25 attack to avoid repaying nearly Rs.32 crore and gain complete control of their business.
Parmar is a partner at GSM Foils Ltd in Diamond Industrial Estate, Vasai East. Bhanusali, a chartered accountant, became a partner only three years ago in the firm, which police said has an annual turnover of Rs.35,000 crore.
According to senior police inspector Dilip Ghuge, two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on Parmar as he stepped out of his office on July 25. One bullet struck his shoulder, while Parmar blocked a second shot before the attacker allegedly assaulted him with the pistol butt. Bhanusali, who was inside the office, rushed the injured businessman to Riddhivinayak Hospital in Nalasopara and alerted police, leaving investigators with no immediate reason to suspect him because Parmar and his family trusted him completely.
Police said Bhanusali had allegedly suffered heavy losses in the international gold trading market after the America-Iran war. Since he was not yet eligible to sell his shares, investigators alleged he persuaded Parmar to sell his own shares and clear loans worth Rs.32 crore owed to several lenders, promising to repay the amount within six months. Parmar first transferred Rs.50 lakh directly to Bhanusali and paid the remaining amount to his lenders.
Investigators alleged Bhanusali later roped in lender Vijay Kumar Vishwakarma, who allegedly agreed to arrange the attack for Rs.30 lakh. Vishwakarma allegedly sourced a pistol for Rs.40,000 through Manoj Thathera in Uttar Pradesh and arranged alleged shooter Sujit Pandey. Police said neither Vishwakarma nor the shooters had any criminal background.
The alleged shooters conducted reconnaissance 15 days before the attack, abandoned their phones during the operation and wore masks to avoid CCTV detection. After the firing, they fled separately while the motorcycle was allegedly dismantled at a Goregaon garage owned by Anup Prajapati.
Ghuge said repeated questioning and the Rs.50 lakh transaction finally broke the case after Bhanusali's expressions changed during interrogation. Police said he then disclosed details of the financial arrangement, leading investigators to allege that the conspiracy was hatched to escape repaying Parmar and seize complete control of the business.
The seven accused were produced before a court on Saturday and remanded to police custody till August 5. Police said the rider escaped towards Uttar Pradesh via Bhiwandi, while Pandey boarded a train to Vapi and stayed with a relative before investigators tracked him....
