Mumbai, Dec. 15 -- A rape-murder accused was arrested on Saturday, 18 years after he allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and killed a 5-year-old girl in 2007. The accused was arrested from his native village in Siddharthnagar district in Uttar Pradesh, where he had been hiding for the last 10 years. According to the crime branch police, the accused, Nandlal alias Nandu Vishwakarma, a resident of Vasai East at the time of the incident, had kidnapped the minor by luring her with chocolates. He then sexually assaulted her, brutally beat her, strangled her, and killed her. Following the incident, a case was registered on April 1, 2007, with the Manikpur police under sections 302 (murder), 363 (kidnapping), and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code. After the accused had been on the run and evading the police for many years, police commissioner of Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar region, Niket Kaushik, had recently issued orders to the Vasai Crime Detection Unit-2 to conduct a parallel investigation. Subsequently, the crime branch conducted an investigation and apprehended him from Khardauri village in Siddharthnagar district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
