Pune college trip turns tragic as eight students drown at Diveagar beach
Mumbai, Oct. 2 -- Eight 16-year-old students from Pune-based Winners Academy drowned at Diveagar beach in Raigad district on Thursday while on an educational trip, raising questions over safety arrangements during the excursion.
The incident occurred around 5.30pm when the students entered a restricted stretch of the sea and were swept away by strong currents. Police said the students did not know how to swim. Their classmates and teachers raised an alarm, following which local residents and water sports operators launched a rescue operation, but all eight students died.
The students were part of a 48-member group comprising 42 students of Classes 11 and 12 and six teachers, who were visiting Raigad Fort and Shrivardhan.
Winners Academy had obtained written consent from parents for the excursion. P7...
