NEW DELHI, Sept. 8 -- The Supreme Court on Monday said people who assault doctors and hospital staff "do not deserve to roam on the streets even for a minute", as it took note of the fresh attack on healthcare workers at a Palghar hospital while hearing a bail challenge involving Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre, accused of assaulting doctors in Thane. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta made the strong observations while hearing Mhatre's plea. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Mhatre, sought permission to withdraw the petition after the bench indicated it would issue notice on the Maharashtra government's appeal challenging the bail granted to him and three other accused. "We are going to issue notice on the State's appeal," the bench said, observing that there appeared to be a "propensity to do these things". "This is their modus operandi. These people do not deserve to roam on the streets. Yesterday, again the same group of people assaulted doctors and hospital staff in Palghar," the bench observed.Rohatgi clarified that those accused in the Palghar incident were not the same people and said he wanted to "put a quietus to this". "The writing on the wall is clear and therefore, I would want to withdraw," he said. The bench, however, stressed that the court needed to send a wider message against attacks on medical professionals. "A message needs to go.not only to these people but to everyone and as a deterrent," it said, adding: "These people do not deserve to be out at all. Such people do not deserve to roam freely on the streets even for a minute." The court issued notice on the Maharashtra government's appeal seeking cancellation of bail granted to Mhatre and three others. It also took note of reports of the Palghar assault and directed that the matter be listed on September 16. Mhatre's petition was subsequently allowed to be withdrawn. The exchange came days after the bench had indicated it was inclined to cancel Mhatre's bail over the alleged July 6 assault at Shastri Nagar General Hospital in Dombivli. On September 1, it was observed that those who attack doctors "don't deserve bail". The Bombay High Court had granted bail to Mhatre and three others on August 7, directing them to remain outside Maharashtra until the charge sheet was filed....
