Minister's kin held for duping man seeking Kumbh tenders
MUMBAI, Aug. 13 -- Two relatives of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and water resources minister Girish Mahajan have been arrested by the Nashik police for forging documents to collect a Rs.2.17-crore bribe from an individual they had promised to help secure tenders for the upcoming Sinhastha Kumbha Mela.
The Nashik crime branch arrested Tanay Anant Mahajan, 32, and Narendra Totaram Mahajan, 51, residents of Girish Mahajan's constituency of Jamaner, on Tuesday. The duo had faked a work order for housekeeping contracts to lead him to believe the tenders the victim had applied for had been cleared. Police said the forged documents used to prepare the fake work order included the signature of the divisional commissioner. The accused have been booked for cheating.
"We have registered three cases at the Nashik Road police station, and the collective amount of the bids for which the accused took money is Rs.591 crore," said Kirankumar Chavan, deputy commissioner of police.
The accused allegedly prepared forged documents showing a list of kumbha mela works and used the government's name and the emblem of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbha Mela Authority, police said. The digital signatures of Praveen Gedam, chairperson of the authority and divisional commissioner of Nashik were forged on the documents, police added. The accused also used fake tender notice numbers of the Nashik Municipal Corporation and forged work orders to gain the confidence of the victim, according to the police.
The accused collected Rs.2.17 crore as commission by promising to secure housekeeping work orders during the mela. Police said the duo admitted to the offence during questioning and further investigation was underway.
Girish Mahajan confirmed that the accused are "distant" relatives, and one of them had similar cases registered against him in the past. "There are a few more people involved in this racket. The police commissioner has revealed all the names to me. Nobody involved in this racket will be spared," Mahajan said....
