"He left his residence around 3pm, saying he was going to work; but instead began moving around Koregaon in an intoxicated condition," said inspector Dipratan Gaikwad of Shikrapur police station.
Gaikwad said that Mahato, in a drunken state, got into an argument with two men. "Our preliminary investigation indicates that following this quarrel, the two men allegedly killed him," he said. Police said they have detained two people including a minor in connection with the case.
"The two persons including a minor are local residents and as it seems like the assault on Mahato was out of quarrel emerging over some instant reason," said Gaikwad.
Earlier in the day, Banerjee in a post on X said: "I am shaken, enraged, and sickened beyond words by the barbaric murder of Sukhen Mahato...This is nothing short of a hate crime."...
