Mumbai, April 4 -- A part of Khotachiwadi, a 200-year-old heritage enclave in the heart of Girgaon, has been demolished for redevelopment, marking a shift in the neighbourhood's character. The Khanderao Block chawls-once home to staff of bungalow owners-are among half a dozen structures that have been razed. Though Khotachiwadi is a Grade III heritage precinct, the demolished buildings lay outside the protected zone, making redevelopment permissible. The Khanderao Block chawls were an extension of the Portuguese-style bungalows in Khotachiwadi, with porches on every floor.
